Can stair lifts be subsidized? The answer is yes!
Subsidies for stair lifts are a major blessing for people with disabilities and seniors. Taiwan is expected to reach 21% by 2025 and officially enter a super-aged society, so those who need assistance should not miss the opportunity to apply. Currently, the main subsidy option for stair lifts is “Assistive Device Subsidies for Persons with Disabilities.” The Long-Term Care Plan 2.0 does not yet apply (this is further explained in point 2 below).
Below, we introduce the application methods and eligibility requirements for readers.
1. Application for Long-Term Care Assistive Device Subsidies for Persons with Disabilities
As the name suggests, this subsidy is an assistive device support program provided for specific groups. Applicants must hold a disability handbook or an official disability certificate in order to be eligible to apply for this type of subsidy.
Eligible Recipients for Stair Lift Assistance
Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
- Persistent vegetative state: Severe brain damage resulting in complete loss of consciousness and inability to move.
- Severe or above physical disability: Loss of arms or legs, or impaired mobility, requiring assistive devices to carry out daily activities.
- Severe or above balance impairment: Serious impairment of balance, making it impossible to walk or stand steadily without assistance.
- Multiple disabilities: Having two or more disabilities, including any one of the categories listed above.
Subsidy Amount for Stair Lifts
Rail-type stair lifts fall under the category of home accessibility renovations within assistive device programs. The subsidy amount varies according to the applicant’s income level, with the maximum amounts as follows:
- Low-income households: NT$80,000
- Lower-middle-income households: NT$60,000
- General households: NT$40,000
Application Process for Long-Term Care Assistive Device Subsidies for Persons with Disabilities
A key point to note in the government-provided assistive device subsidy application process is “approval first, purchase later.” However, before submitting an application to the relevant authorities, it is strongly recommended that applicants consult with an assistive device provider. The provider can conduct an on-site assessment for installation and offer detailed advice on the subsidy application.
Recommended Application Process:
- Submit an assessment request to the local Assistive Device Resource Center.
- After passing the assessment, the applicant submits the required documents to the district office of their residence or the assistive device center to apply for the subsidy.
- Only after receiving the official approval notice from the district office can the assistive device be purchased.
- Submit the original receipt, warranty certificate, and any other necessary documents to request reimbursement.
